Mixed Lubrication of Coupled Journal-Thrust-Bearing Systems Including Mass Conserving Cavitation
نویسندگان
چکیده
A mixed lubrication model is developed to investigate the lubrication of coupled journalthrust-bearing systems. The governing equations are mapped into a computational domain with a conformal mapping technique developed in a previous study by Wang et al. (2002). In order to study the influence of the boundary conditions on the performance of the bearing system, either the Reynolds boundary conditions or the JFO’s mass conserving conditions are applied to the governing Reynolds equations. The performance of a typical coupled journal-thrust bearing system is numerically investigated and the effects of viscosity, misalignment angle and feeding scheme are discussed. @DOI: 10.1115/1.1574519#

Proposal Performance Measurement of ATSP Coating and Bulk PEEK Faced Tilting - Pad Thrust Bearings
Background: Under severe operating conditions, such as lubricant contamination, elevated temperatures and high unit loads, the hydrodynamic (HD) lubrication condition in a HD bearing may degrade and be reduced to mixed and boundary lubrication conditions, which traditional pad bearing materials (Babbitt metal) are not able to sustain. For example, Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) systems are r...
متن کاملA mass–conserving algorithm for dynamical lubrication problems with cavitation
A numerical algorithm for fully–dynamical lubrication problems based on the Elrod– Adams formulation of Reynolds equation with mass–conserving boundary conditions is described. A simple but effective relaxation scheme is used to update the solution maintaining the complementarity conditions on the variables that represents the pressure and fluid fraction. The equations of motion are discretized...
متن کاملBoundary lubrication of heterogeneous surfaces and the onset of cavitation in frictional contacts
Surfaces can be slippery or sticky depending on surface chemistry and roughness. We demonstrate in atomistic simulations that regular and random slip patterns on a surface lead to pressure excursions within a lubricated contact that increase quadratically with decreasing contact separation. This is captured well by a simple hydrodynamic model including wall slip. We predict with this model that...
متن کاملDifferential Quadrature Method for the Analysis of Hydrodynamic Thrust Bearings
This paper presents the application of the method of generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) for the analysis of hydrodynamic thrust bearings. GDQ is a simple, efficient, high-order numerical technique and it uses the information on all grid points to approach the derivatives of the unknown function. The effectiveness of the solution technique is verified by comparing the GDQ computed results...
متن کاملModelling Cavitation in (Elasto)Hydrodynamic Lubrication
In this chapter we will present a derivation of a mathematical model describing how cavitation influences the pressure distribution in a thin lubricant film between two moving surfaces. The main idea in the derivation is to first describe the influence of cavitation on the mass flow and thereafter using a conservation law for the mass. This leads to a nonlinear system with two complementary var...
